It's those little moments together that mean the most when you're helping your baby make their first sounds, giggles, or words. Every game or nursery rhyme helps them recognise your voice. It might not seem like it, but this is a big step in their journey to talking and communicating.

Singing and nursery rhymes

Be face to face with your baby while you sing to them, action songs are great too. For example, row, row, row your boat, rocking your baby back and forth while singing.  Why not try singing during nappy changing time?

Mimicking

When you baby makes noises such as babbling or blowing raspberries, copy the action back to them. This is a good back and forth interaction and is a good way to support their development. Make sure you give your baby time to respond before continuing.

Bubbles

Lie your baby on their back and blow bubbles around them. This is a fantastic way to support their visual tracking. Your baby may even reach towards the bubbles to get to them.

Peek-a-boo

Have your baby in front of you so they can see your face, cover your eyes and when you open your hands say “Peek-a-boo”. With repetition your baby will anticipate when you will show your face.

These types of activities can be done little and often and can become part of your daily routine. Keep it simple and achievable for you and your baby.
