Becoming a first-time dad can be a little tricky to navigate.

Whilst you may not experience the physical changes of pregnancy or birth yourself, becoming a father is still a huge life transition and one that can come with a whole mix of emotions.

You might feel excited, proud and completely in love with your new baby, whilst also feeling worried, anxious or unsure. You may wonder whether you’ll be a good dad, feel pressure to support your partner after birth, or simply find yourself wondering how on earth you’re supposed to change a nappy!

All of these feelings are completely valid.

Becoming a parent is a huge adjustment, and nobody is expected to know exactly what they’re doing from day one. Talking about how you’re feeling with your partner, family, friends or other dads can really help. You might be surprised to find that someone else has felt exactly the same way.

A few things to remember when it all feels a little overwhelming:

There is no such thing as a perfect parent.

You’re learning too. Your baby doesn’t need you to get everything right, they need you to be there, to care and to keep trying.

Confidence takes time.

It’s completely normal to feel unsure, especially when everything is new. The more time you spend caring for your baby, the more naturally those things will begin to feel.

Bonding doesn’t have to be complicated.

There are so many little moments throughout the day where you can build a connection with your baby, cuddles, bath time, reading a story, singing, talking to them or simply making eye contact and pulling silly faces.

Your baby is already learning from you. They’ll begin to recognise your voice, respond to your expressions and enjoy the comfort of your presence.

And yes, you can even get involved with baby massage! Baby massage can be a lovely opportunity for dads to slow down, connect with your baby and enjoy some one-to-one time together.

You don’t need to have all the answers. You don’t need to feel confident all the time. And you certainly don’t need to be a “perfect” dad.

You’re learning your baby, and your baby is learning you.

So, if you’re a new dad reading this, remember:

It’s okay to not know everything.
It’s okay to ask for help.
It’s okay to have big feelings.
And it’s okay to take it one little moment at a time.

Your baby will benefit hugely from having an engaged, loving and caring dad in their life.

Because dads matter too.
